As the largest city in the state of Texas and one of the largest cities in the United States, Houston has many fantastic attractions to visit for those considering a vacation to the Lone Star State. One of the best ways to spend a vacation in Houston is to visit the city’s many attractions that focus on animals and the natural world.

The Houston Zoo is open every day, and visitors should plan to spend the entire day in order to see everything that this zoo has to offer. The zoo houses numerous mammals including Malayan tigers, fossas, otters and African painted dogs. There are many reptiles, amphibians and birds on display as well. There is a special zoo area for children.

The Downtown Aquarium is open every day, and in addition to sea life, there is also an amusement park with rides that include a Ferris wheel and a carousel. The Gulf of Mexico exhibit and the Sunken Temple exhibit are very popular.

The Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary is a great place to view birds in a natural setting. Bird hikes are held during the warmer months, and they take at least a couple of hours to complete.

When you get here try some of the local foodie favorites for, what else, barbeque!
Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ: This one’s a localized chain with locations all the way out in Austin and that’s why it’s so good. It’s cheap enough for the students but authentic enough for any true cowboy to get behind.
Gatlin’s Barbeque: If you’re looking for melt in your mouth brisket don’t go any farther than Gatlin’s. The local favorite has been pleasing taste buds for decades and odds are if you ask 10 people about their favorite BBQ in Houston at least 3 will mention this joint.
Thelma’s BBQ: Be prepared to head into a “shady” area to make it all the way to Thelma’s but also get excited – it’s one of Houston’s hidden gems.

Houston may not be the capital of Texas, but it is the state’s largest city, and it was, after all, named for Sam Houston, the only President of the Republic of Texas, as well as its first governor. Here are some of the best places to dine, stay the night, and find entertainment in the city.

1) Dining
Houston’s restaurants serve a variety of ethnic cuisines. Manila Bistro is a Filipino restaurant; at Ashoka one can eat Indian and Pakistani cuisine; and then there is Hollywood Vietnamese & Chinese cuisine.

2) Lodging
Club Quarters, in the downtown area, is at 69 one of Houston’s cheapest hotels; the building in which it is situated was once a landmark building, now restored. Hotel Derek is in a beautiful building that also includes Valentino Restaurant. Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston River Oaks has lovely trees in its interior.

3) Entertainment recommendations
The Houston Grand Opera gives performances in Jones Hall, and the Houston Symphony performs in the Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park during the summer and in Jesse H. Jones Hall, in the Civic Center, during the winter. At the Civic Center, too, a nationally famous professional acting company performs in Alley Theater.

For those fascinted with outer space and NASA, the Space Center should be a destination. The Downtown Aquarium is a wonderful addition for the intinerary for any family making its way through the city. Other popular tourist locations, especially for families with children on board, should consider the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Prospective doctors and scientists may want to stop at the Health Museum while art admirers can go to the Museum of Fine Arts. Other attractions include parks and the theater district.

Houston, Texas is one of the best places for families to enjoy some great times together. Lots of the hotels have specials for families with children and offer activities for them to enjoy while staying in the area. There are so many things to do and see that are kid friendly that vacationers could spend several weeks and not run out of things to do. Locals and tourists alike enjoy all the well planned activities and it is easy to get coupons and discounts by looking on the internet for many of the attractions.

Several of the restaurants have a kids eat free night and others charge a minimal amount to encourage families to dine out. Because the Houston area is made up of several smaller communities that are easy to access, it is a good idea to check around to see what is happening there and include some of those things when looking for possible places to enjoy. There is a wonderful zoo that anyone would love and young and old alike can have a chance to spend time together. This part of the country is known for it’s hospitality and they are proud of all the things they offer families who come to enjoy a little bit of the Texas lifestyle.
