When was the last time you could discuss your thoughts openly and honestly with others? Have you ever questioned society and it's assumptions or your own? Do you like to have a good, safe discussion without fear of being attacked for having an opinion that is different? This is Socrates Café.
Here, we are a group of individuals who like to talk. We come from all walks of life, all nationalities, all religions, all political views, both genders. We come from North, East, South and West. We get together and discuss what is on our minds, from something on the news that day to the age old questions of "What is ...?"
Time:
7:00pm - 9:00pm
Description:
Join us for a gathering that will bring together people who are interested in local community solutions to a multitude of problems. There will be an informal reception, short presentation and a topical film.
The goal is to develop methods to interest the broader public in positive actions that can be taken in local communities and for people to develop personal policies that are not obscured by political rhetoric, racial and religious segregation, or misinformation.
This is planned to be the beginning of a monthly gathering of like-minded individuals and organizations to broaden public interest in small, local and green business, as well as local agriculture, cultural resources and media access. Please attend the first event on Sunday, March 7 to be part of this initiative and help shape it from the beginning.
Free.

Marilyn Waring demystifies global economics from a feminist perspective.
Please invite others to attend this important educational film event to celebrate International Women's Day.
Marilyn Waring is the foremost spokesperson for global feminist economics, and her ideas offer new avenues of approach for political action. With persistence and wit she has succeeded in drawing attention to the fact that GDP has no negative side to its accounts--such as damage to the environment--and completely ignores the unpaid work of women. "Why is the market economy all that counts?" Ms. Waring asks.
In 1975, when she was just 22 years old, she was elected to the New Zealand parliament. She was re-elected three times, and eventually brought down the government on the issue of making New Zealand a nuclear free zone.
When she was chairperson of the Public Expenditures Committee, she perfected what she calls the "art of the dumb question." Ever since she has challenged the myths of economics, its elitist stance, and our tacit compliance with political agendas that masquerade as objective economic policy.
This film has inspired many people--notably the Who's Counting Project--to work on human-scale economic alternatives, local currency exchanges, and more humane ways of measuring the quality of life.

As Project Director of the Nineteenth Century Texas Black Legislators Monument Project, I am excited and honoured to announce our monument unveiling ceremony commemorating the Nineteenth Century Texas African American Legislators and Constitutional Convention Delegates, to be held at 11:30 AM, Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the Texas State Cemetery, Austin, Texas.
This unveiling will mark the state cemetery’s first monument to commemorate Texas’ first black State Legislators and is believed to be the first Texas monument ever to pay tribute to these remarkable men collectively.
This monument will benefit Texas and the country with an additional resource tool where students and citizens alike can visit and learn more information about these former Texas legislators, their life and their legislative service to the state of Texas.
Please visit the web link provided by the Texas State Library & Archives Commission http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/exhibits/forever/index.html which includes biographies of these men and photograph composites during their tenure in the Texas legislature.
