When was the last time you could discuss your thoughts openly and honestly with others? Have you ever questioned society and it's assumptions or your own? Do you like to have a good, safe discussion without fear of being attacked for having an opinion that is different? This is Socrates Café.
Here, we are a group of individuals who like to talk. We come from all walks of life, all nationalities, all religions, all political views, both genders. We come from North, East, South and West. We get together and discuss what is on our minds, from something on the news that day to the age old questions of "What is ...?"

Across the Great Divide - A fact-based examination of our political, social, cultural and economic divide.
Please join us for a gathering that will bring together people who are interested in local community solutions to a multitude of problems. There will be an informal reception, short presentation and a topical film.
The goal is to develop methods to interest the broader public in positive actions that can be taken in local communities and for people to develop personal policies that are not obscured by political rhetoric, racial and religious segregation, or misinformation.
This is planned to be the beginning of a monthly gathering of like-minded individuals and organizations to broaden public interest in small, local and green business, as well as local agriculture, cultural resources and media access. Please attend the first event on Friday, February 12 to be part of this initiative and help shape it from the beginning.

About Guy Forsyth
It’s been a long and dusty road for wholly independent, Austin-based singer/songwriter Guy Forsyth that’s led to a recent surge in praise over his dazzling live shows and his rich Americana roots sound. Forsyth and his band use their unique mixture of folk, rock, blues, country and Tin Pan Alley to create a sound that’s both raw and compelling: Powerhouse vocals delivering energetic yarns about loves lost and discovered, the state of the nation and the impending apocalypse.
“The insanely talented multi-instrumentalist can put on one hell of a show, alternately dazzling and amusing audiences on a musical journey that ventures from ragtime jazz and Delta blues to socially conscious folk and rollicking modern rock.”

The mission of “People Power” is to commemorate the anniversary of the 1986 EDSA Revolution in the Philippines which toppled the 20-year Marcos dictatorship and restored the democratic process through peaceful non-violent resistance. The spirit of People Power is being mobilized to raise funds for Haiti Counts, a Houston-based non-profit organization launched in 2006 by a Haitian student at Lanier Middle School in Houston ISD to provide basic necessities to children in the poverty-stricken country. Funds raised will be used to purchase urgently needed medical supplies and food and send them to victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.
Sponsored by the Houston Institute for Culture, BahalaNa Tribe and Haiti Counts, the celebration features world beat band The Presidents, Ira Perez, Sole Resonance, Soilborn, and DJ Krackernutz-- all Filipino artists based in Houston, with a special guest performance by Kyra Noons of the Neutral Sisters, who has just released the single "Hold On Haiti" with Mr. Blacc Sheep, available on Amazon, Itunes and CDbaby, the proceeds of which go directly to the Haiti Relief Fund set up by Caribbean Impact. Traditional Filipino food will be served.

Film Screening: The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.
Suggested donation is $3-10 to support the community meeting and event space Houston Institute for Culture provides to arts and community non-profit organizations.
