[9:00am-5:00pm] Donation drive for Haiti
- Description:
- Houston Institute for Culture is hosting a donation drive for Haiti Counts.
At Haiti Counts we are still shaken by the horrific earthquake that hit Port au Prince, Haiti several days ago. Reports suggest that tens of thousands of people are dead and many more are in dire need of assistance. Haiti and its inhabitants are not accustomed to this kind of natural disaster. The government and the people were not prepared. Haiti does not have the resources nor the infrastructure to dig itself out of the rubble created by the earthquake. The lights are out and the water is off. The streets are filled with families searching for or mourning lost relatives. Families have been rendered homeless, hungry, and helpless.
After such a disaster, things that we take for granted become luxuries. It is reported that people that are dying of dehydration, lack of basic medical supplies and inability to find food.
It's time for action in Houston. On Sunday, January 17 and Monday, January 18, 2010, Haiti Counts, The Houston Institute for Culture and other non-profits in Houston are hosting a drive to collect the following items:
1. Medical Supplies/First Aid Kit
2. Candles & Matches
3. Flashlights & Batteries
4. Blankets/Sleeping Bags
5. Tents
Financial donations are strongly encouraged, and will also be accepted on Sunday. All financial donations are tax deductible and will be used to purchase additional quantities of the items above and to send the items to Haiti.
